Fields of Amber @ the Joint

July 24, 2010

Fields of Amber is a band outta Fullerton I recently had the good fortune to sit in with at the Joint in mid city LA. Keepin’ up with these guys is my latest challenge!!

So let’s just say that this was a pretty humbling but completely exhilarating experience for me. Playing several passages that flip and fold around with bars of 3,4, and 5 reminded me that counting (occasionally out loud and for my own good) is still a valuable skill.

We had a few rehearsals to gear up for the show which had me learning their whole set, playing with a backing track, and even a cleverly disguised guitar tune-up breakbeat drum solo.

What can I say, I do love a challenge and testing the limits.

I distinctly remember a few moments in the middle of the night playing potions of ‘Life We Chose’ or ‘Leather Apron’ asking myself, “I wonder how I’m going to count that figure live..?” Having played a show with these guys and lady though I can honestly say that I couldn’t have been happier with how the tunes turned out. I would say this though, the Joint is a very live venue. Sound definitely bounces around the room quite a bit making it difficult to distinguish at times.

Give ‘em a listen, hopefully you’ll be hearing more from them soon!
