Ricky Stewart @ the Curtain Club

January 28, 2010

I went back to Dallas on vacation a few weeks ago and managed to pick up a gig while I was at it!! I was contacted by Ricky Stewart to be a part of his Coldheart Band and play a show @ the Curtain Club in Deep Ellum. I remember going to shows often in this rough neighborhood of downtown Dallas and it was definitely an amazing experience to go play for my friends and family.

I also snagged some video thanks to my old roommate John Rasbury! So if you weren’t around here’s the last song of the set!!

Thanks again to Ricky for getting me the opportunity to play in Dallas.

Who are you playing for?

January 22, 2010

The other day I went out to some lockouts and saw a friend of mine’s band. I hadn’t seen this band before and it’s been a few years since I’ve seen him play. Their lockout was really tricked out and rad which made me a little jealous, but when it came time to play I noticed a few little interesting quirks. I felt like the guys were playing to impress which I suppose is a great form of flattery, but the songs came off a little uneven. This wasn’t a show so it’s tough to be too critical, but we all tend to play like we rehearse.       <Click on this story’s header for more.>

You’re following me right?

January 12, 2010

Over the course of playing with several groups I’ve learned one of the roles that I should have tackled earlier as a drummer, leading. This can be difficult at times because whenever you’re auditioning there is some uncertainty as to what’s what and the whole situation is really fresh and new. Many times I would sit back and pay attention to the guiding instruments, be it lead guitar, vocals, or keyboards. I would allow them to guide me through songs because they knew the songs better than I did right? It’s their music after all.

Am I rockin’ enough for you out there?

When I moved to Los Angeles I was really ready to hit the music scene really hard and get my career in gear. I had been auditioning for several local bands all over the greater Los Angeles area but I noticed that many times I would hear from the bands I was auditioning for that I wasn’t hitting the drums loud enough, or it looked like I wasn’t that into the music.   <Click on this story’s header for more.>
